| Q. Where does my responsibility begin for the sewer line to my home? |
A. The responsibility for the sewer line begins at the main in the street and goes to your home. |
| Q. Is there a charge for opening and closing the street to repair lines? |
A. There is a charge to the property owner of $4.00 a square foot for street openings that involve pavement and a charge of $2.00 a square foot in alley ways where gravel is the main base. |
| Q. Why do we raise our sewer rates periodically? |
| A. Rising costs of chemicals, testing requirements, permit costs, and utility costs are some of the factors which raise the cost of operating and maintaining the waste treatment plant. |
| Q. Why is there a limit on the amount of chlorine we can use? |
| A. Montana Clean Water Act requires the use of chlorine for disinfection - the permit issued by the state sets the limits that are allowed to the receiving stream. |
| Q. Who maintains the distribution system? |
| A. The operators at the plant are also responsible for maintenance on the distribution system. |
| Q. How can we take a tour of the plant? |
| A. Please call 293-2775 and talk to the operator in charge and he can help you schedule a tour of the Waste Treatment Plant. |
| Q. What qualifications are needed to be able to work at a W.W.T.P. ? |
| A. You must have a Montana Class II wastewater license, a Montana COL driver's license, CPR card, computer experience and heavy equipment experience. |
| Q. How does one go about hooking up to the city sewer main, can I do it myself? |
| A. You must notify the city and purchase a permit, the hookup to the main must be done by a licensed plumber. |
| Q. What is a jet cleaner, and how does it work? |
| A. A jet cleaner is a piece of equipment used by the sewer department to clean the city mains. The equipment produces high pressure water that is pumped through a series of different nozzles that pressure wash the mains. |
| Q. What is a vacuum inductor, and how does it work? |
| A. A vacuum inductor is a piece of equipment that is used to vacuum sand, rocks and debris from the city mains. |
| Q. What causes water infiltration into the distribution system? |
| A. Storm events, high ground water levels and service lines in poor condition. |
| Q. How do you separate the water from the sludge? |
| A. The city's plant uses a sand filter bed and also uses a plate filter press. |
| Q. How does our plant operate, what kind of a plant is it? |
| A. The plant operates by natural biological reduction. The plant is an extended aeration with an oxidation ditch, two final clarifiers, digester, and sand filter beds for drying. The plant also has a plate filter press for drying. |
| Q. Why do we have a lift station at Montana Ave and 1st Street? |
| A. The lift station on Montana Ave. is a collection point for the east side of town. The station pumps the sewerage to a receiving main where it then gravity flows to the Treatment Plant. |
| Q. Are employees who work at the plant on call 24 hours a day? |
| A. Yes, the plant is equipped with an alarm system that calls the operator in off hours in the event of plant failure. |
